Relegation to the 2. Bundesliga

Fürth loses relegation first leg in Essen: Only a win counts in the second leg

SpVgg Greuther Fürth faces clear pressure for results ahead of the second leg of the relegation. After the 0:1 (0:0) at Rot-Weiss Essen, the "Kleeblatt" must win next Tuesday to secure their place in the 2. Bundesliga on their own.

Just one goal separates both teams – and yet the first leg showed how narrow the margin is for Fürth: decent phases of play and good field positions are not enough in this pairing if the final determination in attack is missing.

A deficit that puts Fürth under pressure

With the 0:1 in Essen, the starting position has clearly shifted. Rot-Weiss Essen can approach the second leg from a more comfortable position, while Fürth must take action. Since the away goals rule was abolished in the relegation, only the aggregate result from the first and second leg counts; if the score is tied after two matches, extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shootout will follow (DFL). For Fürth, this means in practice: Without a win of their own, it won't work.

Bitter from Fürth's perspective: The conceded goal did not come after a long siege, but in a phase when the match was open. In the 58th minute, keeper Silas Prüfrock initiated a dangerous situation with a bad pass; shortly after, Essen was awarded a free kick in a promising position. Torben Müsel converted it in the 62nd minute from 19 meters into the top right corner – a goal that set the tone for the first leg.

The better phase remained unrewarded

Fürth coach Heiko Vogel relied on the starting eleven that had only reached the relegation with the 3:0 against Fortuna Düsseldorf the previous weekend. In the opening phase, Fürth appeared more stable, had more control – but the attacking power remained limited.

The clearest Fürth chance before the break came from Jannik Dehm: In the 16th minute, he hit the crossbar from about 25 meters. It remained the most dangerous attempt until halftime – a statistical detail that also describes the structural problem of the performance: Fürth got into zones from which at least pressure can be generated, but the quality in the final third – timing, precision, final decision – was too rarely enough for real shots from inside the box or clear scoring chances.

Even after the restart, the match remained hard-fought. At times, there was an interruption due to a medical emergency in the stadium. Athletically, this did not change the basic line: Fürth stayed in the game, but after falling behind, the "Kleeblatt" noticeably lost clarity.

Before the second leg, the offense becomes the core problem

The deficit is minimal – the bigger task lies in how Fürth reacted after the 0:1. Against a consistently defending Essen team, Fürth found no effective solutions to create lasting danger. This is the crucial insight before Tuesday: Not only does the result need to be turned around, but also the quality of their own attacks.

Fürth tried to equalize, but hardly managed actions that really put Essen under pressure. Conversely, Essen showed how quickly the game can turn in transition: In the 84th minute, Dickson Abiama prevailed in a running duel against Philipp Ziereis, but then finished hastily – Prüfrock was able to save. This scene underlines what will be tactically at play in the second leg: The longer Fürth chases a deficit, the greater the risk of being caught on the counter.

The task for the second leg is thus clearly outlined. Fürth played on equal terms with Essen at times – that is the basis. But the key will be to turn decent possession and build-up phases into more commitment: faster, more purposeful actions in depth, cleaner final passes, and above all more presence in finishing positions. Mere control of the game will not be enough; Fürth needs scoring chances – and goals.
