Relegation Battle in the 2nd Division
Fürth on the Brink: Why Only a Perfect Night Would Help on the Final Matchday
SpVgg Greuther Fürth enters the final matchday as 17th in the table and is under pressure at Ronhof: only a win against Fortuna Düsseldorf counts. But even three points would not automatically secure survival – because at the same time, the competition and especially the goal difference play a decisive role.
The starting position is clear and merciless. After the 1:2 at Hertha BSC, Fürth stands at 34 points in 17th place. On Sunday, a direct competitor comes to Fürth with Düsseldorf: Fortuna is 15th with 37 points, Eintracht Braunschweig also has 37 points, Arminia Bielefeld occupies the relegation spot with 36 points.
Fürth must win – and needs a slip-up from the competition
Fürth has the most unfavorable starting position among the endangered teams. Without a home win against Düsseldorf, direct relegation is hardly avoidable, because then the points gap to the rivals remains.
But even a win of their own would only be the ticket to a numbers game. Because as soon as Fürth catches up, in the event of a tie on points, it is not gut feeling but the table mechanics that decide: first the points count – and if those are equal, usually the goal difference, i.e., the difference between goals scored and conceded, separates the teams. For Fürth, this is tricky, because the goal difference is significantly worse compared to the competition. The Franconians therefore not only need their own success, but also help from others.
This is especially evident when looking at Berlin: if Bielefeld gets at least one point at Hertha BSC, Arminia would reach 37 points and remain ahead of Fürth due to the better goal difference – even if the Cloverleaf wins its game. In this scenario, Fürth would still be the loser of the tie despite 37 points.
How narrow the corridor is becomes clear in a possible extreme scenario: Fürth would need at least a 3:0 win against Düsseldorf; if Braunschweig loses 0:3 at Schalke at the same time, Fürth could possibly even secure a non-relegation spot.
These calculations make one thing clear above all: Fürth does not simply need "just" points, but as many goals as possible – and at the same time results that fit their own comeback.
The 1:2 in Berlin: Numerical advantage, 27 shots – and still no security
The fact that Fürth is in this situation at all is directly related to the 1:2 at Hertha BSC. Particularly bitter: Fürth lost in Berlin despite having a numerical advantage. It was a game that smelled of a turnaround – and yet in the end only revealed the familiar weakness that often makes the difference in relegation battles: efficiency.
The numbers underline the dilemma: Fürth recorded 27 shots, but only one found the net. Noel Futkeu headed in the 88th minute to make it 1:2 – too late to turn the game around. Such a game has a double effect in the table: it costs points, and it takes away the chance to improve the goal difference with a better result. Exactly this factor can now decide between relegation play-off or direct relegation on the final matchday.
After the final whistle, the team and coaching staff felt the full force of the situation. On the way to the stands, there were insults and boos. Futkeu summed up the reality: "The fact is: We have to win now. This is now a very big task for us."
Ronhof as the last asset – and a look at Hertha
Fürth is counting on maximum support in their own stadium in the final against Düsseldorf. On the club's homepage, the club is mobilizing: "Every point, every duel, every fan and every cheer counts!" In such games, home advantage can be more than just a backdrop – it can provide energy when nerves make legs heavy. But that is only part of the equation.
Because Fürth remains dependent on the results at the other venues – especially on the outcome of the Hertha BSC vs. Bielefeld match. For Berlin, there is nothing left to play for on the final matchday. At the same time, Hertha is under special observation because coach Stefan Leitl has a Fürth past: from 2019 to 2022 he coached the Cloverleaf. Nevertheless, Leitl announced that he would "definitely put the best possible team" on the field to show "that this season is not over for us." He also recalled a Fürth final experience against Düsseldorf: "When I was coach in Fürth, we also once had a final against Düsseldorf, we won that back then, remember that."
In fact, Fürth won against Fortuna Düsseldorf on the final matchday in 2021 and was promoted to the Bundesliga. This time, it's about the other side of the coin: the possible crash. Since 1997, the club has played continuously in the 2nd division or Bundesliga – a streak that is now seriously threatened.
Futkeu as a beacon of hope – but the problem is bigger than one striker
In the last game, Noel Futkeu inevitably moves into the spotlight. With 18 goals, he is the top scorer in the 2nd division. Fürth needs goals, and Fürth needs them early – because every additional goal can not only secure their own game, but also move the goal difference in the right direction.
But the situation is too complex to be reduced to one attacker. Fürth must deliver against Düsseldorf and at the same time hope that the competition opens the door. The final matchday thus becomes a test in two dimensions: sporting at Ronhof – and mathematical in the distance. Only if both fit together does the Cloverleaf still have a realistic chance of staying up.
