Public viewing in Fürth canceled

Fürth cancels World Cup public viewing on the Freiheit

The planned public viewing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Fürther Freiheit will not take place. Comödie Fürth, which regularly organizes large-scale events such as the Fürth Festival in the city, has withdrawn its plans after discussions with regulatory authorities. According to those responsible, the decisive factor was not the feasibility itself, but the risk of concrete lawsuits from the neighborhood.

Originally, a World Cup beer garden with a large screen was to be set up on the central square starting from the round of 16. The matches of the German national team were to be shown—free of charge and outdoors. Now, the project has been canceled.

Fear of lawsuits halts planning

According to the organizers, some residents had announced their intention to take legal action against the event. Organizer Marcel Gasde said: “We are very disappointed.”

In the end, it would have involved at most four matches. Nevertheless, according to Comödie, preparations were already well advanced: technology, security concept, and catering had been organized, and contracts with partners had been signed. “Unfortunately, these now have to be reversed,” Gasde explained. At the same time, he pointed out that public viewing events in Fürth had been well received in the past and that there had been no incidents.

Why the legal framework was ultimately insufficient

At the federal level, a temporary special regulation for the 2026 World Cup was actually intended to provide relief: it allows exceptions to noise protection so that broadcasts—depending on kickoff times in North America—can also take place later in the evening or at night. However, the decisive factor remains the individual case decision on site. Authorities must weigh how strong the public interest in a broadcast is and how the need for peace and quiet of the residents is protected.

It was precisely in this balancing act that Comödie saw a practical risk: even if approval had been possible, court injunctions could quickly lead to conditions or a temporary stop. Gasde expressed concern that administrative courts could initially uphold objections from individual residents. They did not want to and could not engage in a legal dispute.

The cancellation thus shows how limited planning remains despite nationwide exemptions: they open up possibilities, but do not guarantee legally secure implementation—especially not if resistance is announced in the immediate neighborhood.

Fürth Festival on the Freiheit will take place as planned

The decision does not affect the Fürth Festival, which is scheduled to take place on the Freiheit from July 10 to 12. Comödie is organizing the three festival days.

The program includes, among other things:

  • Gnadenlos Grand Prix on Friday
  • Concerts on Saturday
  • Performances by Volker Heißmann and Martin Rassau on Sunday

The cancellation thus affects only the planned World Cup public viewing format on the Freiheit, not the other summer events at this location.
