Association Dreycedern e.V. | Dementia and Health Education
The Association Dreycedern e.V. is not an ordinary place in Erlangen, but a house with a clear social mission and remarkable continuity. At Altstädter Kirchenplatz 6, the facility combines counseling, education, encounters, and support under one roof. Therefore, those looking for the name Dreycedern find not only an address in the old town but primarily a point of contact for questions related to health in the second half of life, for people with dementia, for relatives, and for older individuals who want to actively shape their quality of life. The association describes itself as an information, counseling, and educational institution that works closely with the needs of the urban community through courses, groups, consultation hours, and projects. For decades, the house at Altstädter Kirchenplatz has been connected with seniors and people with various disabilities and is considered a fixed address for support, orientation, and participation in Erlangen. ([dreycedern.de](https://dreycedern.de/))
Dementia Counseling and Specialized Office for Caregivers
A central theme of the house is support for dementia. According to the official website, the specialized office for caregivers and people with dementia is available for all questions related to care and the condition of dementia. The team accompanies those affected in all phases of the disease, provides information about dementia, supports maintaining one's quality of life, assists in finding solutions to reduce burdens, and advises on selecting suitable support services. If necessary, professionals also come to the home, which can be particularly valuable for relatives in stressful everyday situations. Additionally, the specialized office offers help in crisis situations and works closely with the reality of families living with a dementia diagnosis. For seekers from Erlangen and Erlangen-Höchstadt, this is particularly important because Dreycedern is not only a general point of contact but is also known regionally as a fixed address on the topic of dementia. The specialized office is also funded by the Bavarian State Ministry for Health, Care, and Prevention and supported by the city of Erlangen. In practice, this means: Those with questions about diagnostics, relief, daily life, communication, or suitable aids find here not an anonymous platform but a concrete point of contact with municipal integration and professional proximity. This combination of counseling, education, and practical relief makes the area of dementia one of the most important pillars in the profile of Dreycedern. ([dreycedern.de](https://dreycedern.de/demenz/))
Depression in Old Age: Counseling, Self-Help, and Support
Another focus is the counseling center DiA – Depression in Old Age. The annual report states that the topic of depression has been a fixed part of the association's work since 2001 when the Erlangen Alliance Against Depression was founded, and Dreycedern took over coordination. In 2013, the work was conceptually focused on the second half of life because it had become evident that while there are many aids for depressive illnesses, there are only a few offerings specifically aimed at older people. This led to the establishment of the counseling center DiA, which is described in the annual report as the first and only institution in Erlangen that specifically deals with depression in the second half of life. For those affected and their relatives, this is more than just a label: it means an environment where age-related depression is not trivialized, and the living situation of older people is at the center. The current program overview also shows concrete formats such as monthly discussion groups, consultation hours for people with early-stage dementia, and other supportive offerings. The Erlangen Alliance Against Depression also remains part of this work, creating public awareness, education, and networking. For search intentions related to depression in old age, Dreycedern is therefore a particularly relevant place because it combines counseling, self-help, and city cooperation. Those who want to learn about symptoms, relief, or the first step towards help encounter a house that is professionally specialized yet consciously works at a low threshold. This blend of professionalism and human approach shapes the credibility of the institution. ([dreycedern.de](https://dreycedern.de/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/2020_Dreycedern-Jahresbericht.pdf))
Health Education in the Second Half of Life
In addition to counseling, health education is the second major core of Dreycedern. The website states as a slogan that it focuses on the theme of aging in balance and makes it clear that the house sees itself as a meeting point for health education in the second half of life. The content ranges from movement and relaxation to creative formats, lectures, seminars, and groups. The chapter in the annual report describing the association's work characterizes this area as the germ cell of the institution: since its beginnings, it has been about promoting personal responsibility for one's health and the health of others and practically implementing health-promoting measures. This is precisely why the courses do not feel like arbitrary leisure offerings but rather like consciously designed formats for active, self-determined aging. One example is Qi Gong. The course is designed to be conducted while sitting and standing, making it suitable for people who can no longer or do not wish to lie on the mat. The description emphasizes that the exercises are easy to learn, make the body noticeable, and can positively affect well-being and relaxation. Another example is the painting circle, which has been part of the house for 40 years and has fostered talents across generations. This long duration shows that Dreycedern not only creates current offerings but also maintains established, binding course structures. For inquiries such as health education, movement, relaxation, or creative courses in Erlangen, the house is therefore a very strong content signal. It is not about a rigid understanding of health but about activation, participation, and joy in abilities that can be further developed at any age. ([dreycedern.de](https://dreycedern.de/))
Events, Courses, and Open Meeting Points in the House
Dreycedern is also a place for recurring meetings and open formats. The current and past programs show how broad the house is set up: there are inclusive offerings, discussion groups, movement groups, musical formats, creative courses, and informational events. Examples from the program include the accompanied play meeting SpielRaum, the inclusive singing group Sing mit, schwing mit!, the offering Lichtblick for older people with depression experience and early-stage dementia, as well as discussion groups for relatives of people with dementia. Particularly noteworthy is that many of these formats are not only professionally accompanied but are also explicitly described as protected, quiet, and low-threshold spaces. In this way, Dreycedern fulfills a function that goes beyond classical counseling: the house creates social occasions that counteract isolation and enable new contacts. This is also in line with the neighborhood project Altstadt und Burgberg: Together in Old Age, which has been newly oriented since September 2025 and focuses on participation, involvement, and low-threshold support for older people. The project works with open consultation hours, on-site counseling, appointments by arrangement, or home visits and lectures on care, health, and provision. The event pages also show that Dreycedern continually picks up cultural and community impulses. One program point announced an exhibition in the large hall on the ground floor, the opening of which was linked to the opening hours of the Bistro Sprungbretter e.V. This illustrates that the place is not only a counseling space but also a neighborhood meeting point. Therefore, those looking for events in Erlangen will not find a classic event hall here but a multifaceted house with a lively, social, and intergenerational program. ([dreycedern.de](https://dreycedern.de/vergiss-dich-nicht/))
Access, Parking, and Accessibility in Erlangen City Center
The location of the association is practical for visitors because Altstädter Kirchenplatz is located in the middle of the city center and is easily accessible from many destinations. The city of Erlangen points out that there are free capacities in the parking garages and underground garages around the city center at all times of the day and that trade, gastronomy, and cultural institutions can be conveniently reached on foot or by the buses in the free city center area. Particularly helpful is the City Line 299, which, according to the city, serves several stops in the center every seven to eight minutes and connects the large parking lot with various important points in the city. The mentioned parking options in the city center include, among others, the parking garage Henkestraße, the underground garage Sedanstraße, the parking garage Neuer Markt, the parking lot Theaterplatz, and the park area Kaufland or Fuchsenwiese. Therefore, those arriving by car should not expect a parking space directly in front of the house but should use the well-signposted city center offerings. Those traveling by bus and train benefit from the fact that the center is located in the free city center area and can be reached without an additional ticket. The city describes the free area as well-connected and emphasizes that since January 1, 2024, all bus lines within this area can be used free of charge. For visitors to Dreycedern, this is a clear advantage: appointments, courses, and counseling can be organized well without complicated parking searches and with a very central location. This combination of a central location, barrier-free public transport, and nearby parking options is particularly sensible for older people, relatives, and individuals with limited mobility. ([erlangen.de](https://erlangen.de/aktuelles/parken-in-erlangen))
History, Development, and Special Features of the House
What makes Dreycedern special is not only the current offerings but also the developed history of the house. The annual report describes that the association has been based at Altstädter Kirchenplatz 6 for almost 40 years and that the building has been associated with offerings for seniors and people with various disabilities since then. For over 20 years, it has also been considered a fixed part of the Erlangen cityscape under the name House of Health. This classification is important because it shows that the location was not chosen randomly but has been thematically and socially charged over decades. Health in old age is not a secondary focus there but the guiding idea of the house. Historically, several lines of development can be recognized in the annual report: health education as the origin, the specialized office for caregivers and people with dementia recognized in 2003, and the work around depression in old age, which developed from 2001 and received a clear form with the counseling center DiA in 2013. Additionally, since 2020, there has been neighborhood-based work that initially started under Altstadt trifft Burgberg and was later further developed. As a result, Dreycedern is today not only a counseling place but also a hub for neighborhood, networking, and social participation. This is particularly interesting for the perception as an event and location venue: the house stands for meaningful content, for encounters with attitude, and for an environment where activities are not arbitrary but closely related to real life situations. Therefore, those searching for Association Dreycedern e.V., Altstädter Kirchenplatz, dementia counseling, depression in old age, or health education will find here a house with a long history, a clear mission, and a very concrete role in the life of the city of Erlangen. We need to clear things up here: The "Verein Dreycedern e.V." is a social organization that runs a social center here. There are three great topics on the outside of the door: 1 – "Meeting Point for Health Education in the Second Half of Life" 2 – "Specialist Center for Caregivers and People with Dementia" 3 – "Counseling Center DiA – Dementia in Old Age" So, now that we've cleared things up: You probably haven't eaten great pork loins here. But maybe next door – in the bistro, which is probably also run by this organization? And which I'm now finally going to correctly add as a map entry on Google Maps as "bistro"...

Bistro with a very good and affordable lunch menu. No alcoholic drinks. Outdoor seating with a lovely view. Relaxed atmosphere. A little hidden gem!

They have a very good lunch there at an even better price. My group and I always go there when there's a celebration. But you should know, there's no alcohol in Dreycedern. Some of the people who work there have addiction problems and receive support there to manage their illness.

A real hidden gem! Excellent food and very good value for money! The pork tenderloin is especially worth it! Service can sometimes be a little slow, but that's perfectly fine since it's a community-run establishment and not a professional restaurant. You can also sit on the terrace in the summer, which is lovely.

Great advice and information center. It helped me a lot and still does. And guys, it's not a gym! ^^
