Relegation before the second leg
Fürth loses first leg in Essen: Vogel criticizes offense – Futkeu announces "fireworks"
SpVgg Greuther Fürth lost the first leg of the relegation playoff at Rot-Weiss Essen 0:1. The only goal was scored by Torben Müsel in the 62nd minute. The situation for the second leg remains clear: Fürth must convert its good phases of play into goals – and that's exactly where coach Heiko Vogel saw the decisive construction site after the first duel.
Good approaches, too little yield: Fürth wastes the first half
"It's not a dream result," said Vogel after the 0:1 – a brief summary that at the same time reveals what Fürth is missing: impact in the final third. Because despite a decent style of play, the Shamrocks were too imprecise and too hesitant in the decisive moments.
In the first half, Fürth had the better share of play and came to moments that could have made an away goal possible. This became particularly clear in the 16th minute, when Jannik Dehm hit the crossbar from about 25 meters. It was symbolic of a phase in which Fürth built up control but did not take the last step – finishing, following up, clarity – consistently enough.
Vogel formulated his criticism accordingly sharply and stuck to the core question of the evening: "We failed to take our chances." He also criticized that offensively it was "a bit too little" and "too hesitant in some phases." Behind these sentences is more than just frustration with the result: In relegation matches, games often do not tip over possession, but over efficiency – and Fürth left the opportunities of the early phase unused.
One sting is enough for Essen – and intensifies Fürth's problem area
After the break, the dynamics of the match changed. Essen remained compact, waited for transition moments – and used one of them. Müsel scored in the 62nd minute to make it 1:0. Fürth was suddenly faced with a task that was already difficult in the first leg: not only to attack a deep, tightly knit block, but also to break through it.
Especially in this game constellation, it is often decisive how clearly a team finishes its attacks: Is the ball played forward more quickly? Do crosses come from better zones? Is there more presence in the penalty area for second balls? Before conceding the goal, Fürth had more possession, but too rarely the final sharpness. After falling behind, the pressure increased – and the attacks looked even more like a desperate attempt, lacking the decisive action.
Futkeu as the key – and the home factor as a beacon of hope
The focus before the second leg is on Noel Futkeu, Fürth's top scorer of the second division season with 19 goals. In the first leg, he rarely got into situations that suit a center forward. Futkeu explained this after the match with the way Essen defended: "Strikers generally have a hard time when you play against a deep block, like they did. You usually have to wait for that one chance."
Fürth needs exactly that one chance in the second leg – ideally several. That will also be a question of support: If Essen sits deep again, Fürth will have to find solutions through faster passing, runs behind the last line, and more consistency on the second ball. Just as important: composure in the moments when a gap opens up only briefly.
Vogel also emphasized Futkeu's discipline; he "handled it tremendously" and did not allow himself to be provoked.
After the final whistle, Futkeu clearly focused on the home game: "I'm ready, at home we're strong and at home I've scored most of my goals." And with a view to the second leg, he added: a "fireworks like against Düsseldorf," plus the clear claim that they will "get the job done at home."
The confidence is there – the task remains tangible. Fürth must turn ball wins and pressure phases into real finishes more quickly and be more decisive in the penalty area. The first leg showed: game control alone is not enough in this relegation. The second leg will decide whether Fürth can translate its superiority into goals.
