Relegation battle intensifies dramatically

Fürth before the last matchday: After 1:2 at Hertha, only a clear victory against Düsseldorf counts

The 1:2 defeat at Hertha BSC has further intensified the situation of SpVgg Greuther Fürth at the bottom of the table. Particularly painful from the Cloverleaf's perspective: Fürth played with a man advantage from the 32nd minute after Brekalo's red card, but for long stretches failed to turn the numerical advantage into points. Before the final duel with Fortuna Düsseldorf (17.5.), the margin for error is now extremely small.

Fürth does not use the numerical advantage

Fürth had in Berlin for a long time the constellation that can often be decisive in a relegation battle: more players on the pitch, more phases of possession, more opportunities to get the opponent moving. But exactly this lever did not work.

Instead of consistently exploiting Hertha's numerical disadvantage, Fürth's superiority too often lacked the final consequence in the penalty area.

The fact that Hertha is coached by Stefan Leitl, who is mentioned in the text as ex-Fürth coach (2019 to 2022), gives the result an additional layer. But that does not change the core: Fürth missed a great chance in a favorable starting position to noticeably reduce the pressure before the season finale.

Efficiency decides the match

The numbers underline how much this match turned on Fürth's lack of penetration: 29 shots for Fürth, 8 for Hertha – and yet it ended in defeat. Such games usually tell less of "bad luck" than of the question of how cleanly a team translates its superiority into clear chances, second balls, and usable situations.

Hertha used their moments much more purposefully. Kennet Eichhorn scored the lead in the 55th minute, Michael Cuisance increased to 2:0 in the 84th minute. Fürth only managed to pull one back late through Noel Futkeu (88th) – too late to turn the game around.

Fürth's problem was therefore not the number of offensive actions, but their quality in the decisive area: Numerical advantage and more shots are only an advantage in the relegation battle if they result in goals or at least points. In Berlin, Fürth failed to provide this proof.

Only a narrow way out remains at the bottom of the table

Before the last matchday, Fürth is 17th in the table with 34 points and a goal difference of minus 22. Braunschweig is in 14th place with 37 points (minus 17), Fortuna Düsseldorf in 15th place also with 37 points (minus 17). Arminia Bielefeld is in 16th place with 36 points and minus 3.

This makes it clear why Fürth's task against Düsseldorf is not just to "win", but to "win big": If points are equal, goal difference usually decides the placement – and Fürth's minus is significantly worse than that of the direct competition. Fürth still has the relegation place in its own hands, but must win against Düsseldorf by at least three goals on the last matchday to overtake Fortuna.

The drop is therefore not mathematically sealed – but in sporting terms, Fürth has ended up in a situation after the 1:2 in Berlin where there are hardly any intermediate stages: Not only three points are needed, but a result that changes the entire statics at the bottom of the table in one fell swoop.
