Visitation: A Century of German History as an Impressive Live Audio Play
A house on the shore of a Markish lake becomes a silent witness to a turbulent German history. In the production of the Fürth City Theater, literature, acting, and sound come together to create an atmospheric stage experience that transforms Jenny Erpenbeck's novel Visitation into an immediate theatrical form.
A House that Preserves Memories
From the splendor of the 1920s to the present, the fate of a property condenses into a panorama of the 20th century. An architect flees to the West in the 1950s, a Jewish merchant loses his property, and a writer experiences in the 1970s how her granddaughter plays in the now state-owned garden. Each resident leaves traces: visible in the space, hidden in memories, and inscribed in history.
When Voices, Sounds, and Music Become Characters
The direction by Anna-Lena Kühner relies on the special power of the live audio play. Voices, sounds, and music create a dense soundscape where the rustling of the lake, the atmosphere of the house, and the internal monologues of the characters merge. The set design by Andreas Braun opens a resonance space between external architecture and mental memory.
With Boris Keil, Janina Zschernig, and Jürgen Heimüller, a polyphonic play emerges that blurs the boundaries between literature and theater. The actors switch between narration, dialogue, and acoustic design. This develops into a concentrated production whose impact relies less on spectacular effects and more on precision, rhythm, and the power of spoken words.
Jenny Erpenbeck's Novel as a Poetic History Panorama
Jenny Erpenbeck's novel, published in 2008, traces life lines shaped by political upheavals, loss, and societal violence. The award-winning author combines historical accuracy with a poetic, condensed language. Visitation does not tell history from the perspective of a single hero, but from the changing viewpoints of the people who inhabit a place and then leave it again.
Above all stands the timeless gardener who tends the garden over decades. In this character, the dramaturgy finds a quiet counter-image to transience: while political systems and personal life plans disappear, the place remains as memory.
An Intense Stage Experience at the Cultural Forum Fürth
The live audio play is aimed at an audience aged 15 and over. The production contains strobe effects as well as acoustically depicted scenes of violence and sexual violence. Additionally, themes from the time of National Socialism and the Holocaust are addressed.
Conclusion: Visitation promises a concentrated theater evening between literary adaptation, sound art, and memory theater. Those who want to experience how a whole century emerges from voices, sounds, and few visible signs will find an extraordinary stage experience in the Small Hall of the Cultural Forum. Tickets for the performance on April 10, 2027, are available for pre-sale.
