How Images of Masculinity Shape Our Time

When is a man a man? The lecture Of Military Heroes and Alpha Males examines images of masculinity across art history, societal change, and digital present. On Thursday, November 19, 2026, vhs Fürth invites you to an enlightening exploration of how concepts of strength, authority, and identity arise.

From Soldierly Heroes to Digital Role Models

The event spans depictions from the 19th century to current images on TikTok. The central observation is that masculinity is never experienced solely on an individual level but is shaped by painting, media, political discourse, and cultural paradigms. Historical visual worlds of the military hero relate to modern role models of the successful high performer or the self-styled influencer.

Art as a Mirror of Societal Role Models

The examination of works provides an art historical approach to body posture, clothing, gesture, and staging. In the painting of the 19th century, male figures often appear as embodiments of order, courage, and national strength. The lecture makes visible how such image patterns stabilize cultural expectations and how their significance changes over time.

Between Aesthetic Experience and Digital Dynamics

The art experience today does not end at the museum door. On platforms like TikTok, concepts of masculinity spread at high speed. In addition to lifestyle and success narratives, problematic gender role images, religious attitudes, and political ideologies can gain influence. Therefore, the event combines art historical expertise with media criticism and cultural education.

An Evening of Critical Work Examination

The exhibition atmosphere of classical artworks is conceptually confronted with the visual logic of social media in this lecture. Forms of self-presentation, body images, and aesthetics of power appear in a new context. This creates an engaging aesthetic experience that does not remain focused on individual images but sharpens the view of one's own present.

Conclusion

Visitors can expect an insightful evening about art, media, and the mutable construction of masculinity. Those who wish to understand historical visual language and critically assess digital role models will experience cultural education with societal relevance in Fürth. The event invites, to reconsider familiar notions and expand personal perception.
